Strong governance frameworks also help deployers quickly adapt to changing regulatory requirements and scale their AI usage more effectively.<\/p>\n Product manufacturers<\/strong> place products with embedded AI systems in the market under their own name or trademark. Through effective AI governance, manufacturers can better manage their AI supply chain, ensure product quality, and build trust with end-users. This translates to stronger brand value and reduced liability risks.<\/p>\n Importers <\/strong>bring AI systems or GPAI developed by non-EU companies into the market. With strong governance practices, importers can better assess potential risks, ensure compliance, and position themselves as trusted intermediaries between non-EU providers and EU customers.<\/p>\n Authorized representatives<\/strong> act as intermediaries between non-EU providers and EU authorities and consumers. By implementing robust governance frameworks, they can offer enhanced compliance assurance services and build stronger relationships with both providers and regulators.<\/p>\n Distributors <\/strong>supply AI to the EU market without taking on other roles. Strong AI governance helps distributors evaluate the AI systems they distribute more effectively, manage compliance documentation more effectively, and build trusted relationships with suppliers and customers.<\/p>\n Many companies wear multiple hats \u2013 you might be developing an AI system (Provider) while also using third-party AI tools in your operations (Deployer). In these cases, a comprehensive AI governance framework becomes even more valuable, helping to manage compliance obligations while creating operational efficiencies across roles.<\/p>\n Remember that while providers bear the majority of compliance obligations, every role in the AI ecosystem can leverage strong governance practices to create competitive advantages and build trusted relationships with partners and customers.<\/p>\n The Act divides AI systems into four categories based on their potential impact:<\/p>\n Unacceptable risk (the “no-go zone”)<\/strong>: Think of social scoring systems or AI that manipulates vulnerable people. These are entirely banned.<\/p>\n High risk (the “proceed with caution” zone)<\/strong>: AI systems that could significantly impact people’s lives, such as HR tools that screen resumes or evaluate job performance, medical diagnosis systems, credit scoring systems, and law enforcement AI.<\/p>\n Limited risk (the “transparency” zone)<\/strong>: AI systems that interact with end users like customer service chatbots or image generators.<\/p>\n Minimal risk (the “green light” zone)<\/strong>: AI applications that don\u2019t have a significant impact on safety, health, or human rights like spam filters, gaming AI, and inventory management systems.<\/p>\n Similarly, the Act differentiates between GPAI<\/strong> and GPAI with systemic risk<\/strong>.
